The Baker/baker Paradox

_

Updated: Sep 10, 2023

The Baker/baker Paradox is a memory technique which uses associations for remembering information such as peoples' names.  For example, through associations it's easy to see how one person can remember Mr Baker as a baker who bakes and another person cannot remember Mr Baker as just Mr Baker.  Therefore with Mr Baker as a baker baking ringed donuts, we are more likely to remember his surname through that association than through his surname alone.

Making associations with surnames work as memory triggers but let's delve a little deeper.  How about remembering forenames through associations?

Imagine you're sitting in a conference room with approximately one hundred and fifty other people on a training weekend.  One of your tasks is to introduce yourself to as many people as possible, and after introductions, remember the forenames of those people.

The easiest way to do this is to reduce the amount of associations to just one.  A rhyming word of a person's name makes an ideal association.  For example Dave introduces himself to you and a rhyming word for Dave is cave.  So you picture a cave in your mind and associate the cave with Dave.

So why memorise and remember people's names?

Firstly, a person's name is held with the upmost importance.  After all it is one of the first, if not the first words, a person learns and hearing their name is like music to their ears.  So in building firm relationships with new friends, customers, patients, peers and clients, it's highly important to remember a person's name for starting that process.

Memorising a person's name makes that person more memorable and makes it easier when recommending and referring people to others.

Lastly, when picturing things in our mind, we tap into an area of the brain which isn't used so actively.  The more we tap into it the more imaginative and creative we become.  This in turn strengthens the brain by producing new brain cells and makes the brain healthier.

So now that you have the basic tool for remembering people's names, you just have that tiny detail of making sure you spell their names correctly!
